Visualization during Labor

Labor can feel very intense and overwhelming. Especially as it progresses into active labor. It is often described as an out of body experience. I’ve found (both personally and for my clients) that visualization can be really helpful.

Visualization is a technique used for relaxation and meditation and it is a GAME CHANGER during labor. There are 3 different approaches that I like to teach clients.

  1. Imagine you are somewhere relaxing. If it is personal to you, all the better. Often times people pick a day at the beach or a walking through a forrest. What can you hear, see, smell?

  2. Reliving a joyous event that actually happened. For example, a fun date or vacation. If it’s an event you shared with your partner it can be helpful for them to re-tell it to you in a way that engages all your senses (sight, smell, hearing, feeling, taste). What did you eat? Who was there? What was fun about it? Keep it positive

  3. Visualizing what is actually happening in your body at that very moment. For example, your cervix is opening, you are becoming more and more dilated, baby is descending, etc.
